Cutting the Cake: A Moment with Meaning

In this post, I’ll talk you through some of the do’s, dont’s, and other considerations you should have in mind surrounding this highly photographed and deliciously fun moment!

Feel free to listen to my Cake Cutting playlist while you read!

First and foremost, my favorite reminder: There is no RIGHT WAY to do any part of the wedding day. Each tradition associated with weddings should be thought of as a ritual that represents an idea and those ideas are always evolving.

DO:
Make the cake cutting a moment about unity and teamwork.

I take this moment as a chance to frame your newly elevated relationship as an example of how you will approach LIFE together. Let this be a chance to show off how well you work together on challenges big and small.

DON’T:
Smash cake in your favorite person’s face.

The messy experience is based on outdated beliefs surrounding subservience and fertility. Your partner spent a lot of time (and money!) to look great beside you on this beautiful day. You don’t want to waste any time or energy on cleaning up!

DO:
Consider alternatives for your guest’s dessert.

Cupcakes, mini-pies, cookies, or a combination of all the above may be a guest-friendly way to give your guests a variety of choices. You can still have your own cake for cutting…and eating it too.

DON’T:
Break the budget on the cake.

Couples have been opting for a delicious but smaller cake options, especially when providing alternative desserts for guests. The cake cutting can be an important ritual, but you don’t have to break the bank on a singular item that is consumed in a matter of minutes!

DO:
Make the moment a fun one!

Check out my Cake Cutting playlist on Spotify if you haven’t already. The cake cutting can be YOUR vibe. Fun, funny, romantic, and everything in between! This is just one of the moments we’ll work together to bring your vision to life.
